With endless terrain at your fingertips and some of the world’s best freeriding, there’s a reason Verbier is top of every snowboarder’s list. Part of one of the world’s top five lift-linked ski areas, there’s something for every level of boarder here, from sunny nursery slopes to epic backcountry. Unlike many of Europe’s glitzy ski resorts, snowboarders are welcomed with open arms, and you’ll find a fantastic community off the slopes.

But with so much ground to cover, how can you pack everything into one week? Find the best Verbier has to offer with this complete guide to snowboarding in Verbier, including the best pistes for your level, the coolest freestyle parks, and its accessible backcountry slopes.

Looking for a boarders holiday? Check out our collection of luxury chalets in Verbier and speak with The Luxury Chalet co. team for first hand experience of snowboarding in Verbier.

The Verbier Ski Area

With a base at 1,500m and a peak at 3,300m, Verbier offers exquisite snow for every level of boarder. High-speed lifts provide breezy access across the resort, allowing you to reach new heights in minutes and take long cruises back into town.

Verbier is often hailed as an expert’s paradise, with 27% of the piste graded as advanced. If you’d call yourself a confident intermediate, it’s worth investing in a 4 Valleys lift pass. It gives you access to 410km of piste across the neighbouring resorts of Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, and La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres. They’re linked by tricky red runs, so newer snowboarders might want to give this a miss. There’s a heap to discover under the Verbier lift pass anyway!

Beginner boarders will have a great time in La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres, where you’ll find a good beginner area and lots of surrounding slopes to progress on. More confident boarders shouldn’t dismiss this area though- you’ll find lots of quiet routes through the trees. Thyon and Veysonnaz are perfect for mixed groups, with quiet slopes and a great variety of piste.

The north-facing slopes at Nendaz are popular for tricky itinerary runs, but there are some fun reds and blues here for riders who prefer to stay on the piste. Bruson is the real snowboarding hot spot. An absolute paradise if you don’t have two sticks and two poles, its sheltered tree-lined slopes keep the snow light and fluffy.

Beginner Snowboarders In Verbier

If you’re just getting started, there are two free magic carpets close to town perfect for mastering the basics. It’s sheltered from the elements but still has great snow, and you’ll save energy commuting before you take your first tumbles.

You’ll want to progress up to Les Esserts as quickly as you can. A short bus ride away, it’s a little higher up so gives you your first taste of legendary mountain views. It’s home to Switzerland’s longest magic carpet, but you’ll have to get used to using drag lifts early on. In the long term, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it’ll prepare you for your transition onto the fast-moving chairs. There’s also a restaurant with a terrace here, perfect for watching your kids master their first linked turn or for meeting your friends for lunch.

Les Esserts is just below Savoleyres, the perfect place to show off your new skills. Start on Les Rouge, a slightly trickier nursery slope, before exploring the gentle blues in the wider La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres area.

Intermediate Snowboarders In Verbier

Newer intermediates may get frustrated in Verbier. Pistes can be unpredictable, ranging from fabulous wide slopes to thin, steep areas and lots of unexpected flats. As you get to know the slopes over the week, you’ll learn which spots to avoid and where’s best to hold your speed. In the long run, this is going to make you a better boarder for many trips to come.

The gentle blues in La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres will build up your confidence, and it’s also home to some of the easiest reds in Verbier when you’re ready for more of a challenge. From here you can move on to the short easy blues at La Chaux and wrap up the day with the long Etierces back to Verbier.

Or head to Attelas and take the cruisy Lacs run through the trees. From here you can take the lift back down to Les Ruinettes or risk it on the long Attelas red.

Once you’re confident on reds, the whole of the 4 Valleys really is your oyster! If drag lifts are your worst nightmare, you’ll want to avoid some spots around Veysonnaz, Thyon and Siviez. The crowded route in and out of Nendaz is also a pain, so it might be worth taking the lifts to avoid it.

If snowboarding is your new passion, you’ll want to get over to Bruson fast. It’s a paradise for snowboarders, with wide slopes and exquisite snow. Just stay away on bad weather days, as this is when the skiers flock here for shelter.

Advanced Snowboarders In Verbier

Advanced snowboarders will also love the Bruson area, especially if you want to steer your route a little off-piste. The place is powder central, with lots of fun tree paths and bowls to help you mix things up.

For the best choice of tricky pisted terrain, head to Greppon Blanc. Here you’ll find three black runs and some challenging reds. From here you’re well placed to reach Etherolla, where you’ll find two long blacks with outstanding views.

Mont Fort is the most famous peak in Verbier for its tricky black run and accessible backcountry. It’s the highest peak in the 4 Valleys, with awe-inspiring views across to the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin, and Mont Blanc. The steep, long, and mogulled black down isn’t for the faint of heart. But you can tag it on to a cruise back to Verbier totalling 15km- an epic way to end the day. While Mont Fort is a paradise for off-piste skiers, it’s not the top choice for snowboarders thanks to the amount of walking involved.

When looking at a piste map, confident riders might be unimpressed by the amount of black squiggles. Many of Verbier’s former blacks are now marked as yellow itinerary runs. This means they open according to safety risks but aren’t pisted or patrolled. If you’re looking for a less scary introduction to backcountry, these are the routes for you. And, with many of them accessible from the lifts, you can keep the hiking to a minimum.

Lac des Vaux has some fantastic itineraries for intermediates, while the huge bowl at La Chaux offers endless satisfaction. The Tortin run is the most famous, but the rocky traverse at the start is a pain without poles.

Verbier’s freeriding is some of the most iconic in the world. Bruson, Mont Gele, and Chassoure are all home to dreamy powder. For an in-depth look at Verbier’s backcountry, check out our guide to off-piste skiing in Verbier.

Freestyle Snowboarding In Verbier

Freestylers will find more than enough to keep them busy in the 4 Valleys, with the easiest park to access from Verbier in La Chaux. It sits at 2,260m, offering epic Grand Combin views for your action shots. There’s a huge choice of jumps and rails on five different lines and a giant airbag with a camera system to capture your airtime. While the parks aren’t a true focus for Verbier, the natural lifts more than make up for it.

If you aren’t satisfied with Verbier’s snow park, head over to Thyon or Nendaz. Nendaz is home to a beginner park and the super cool Wood Park. This eco-park uses natural snow and funky slides, kickers, rails and boxes all made from wood.

Thyon is a freestyle hot spot. Its Central Park is suitable for all abilities, home to an airbag, multiple lines, and a boardercross run. Freestyle not your thing? Hang out at the bar with music at the bottom and watch your mates send it. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a week of snowboarding in Verbier.

With endless choices, accessible backcountry, and legendary itineraries, Verbier is one of the most popular spots in the world for off-piste skiing. Whether you want to navigate steep terrain, hair-raising couloirs, icy glaciers or huge powder bowls, the 4 Valleys is the place to be this winter.

But if you’re only in Verbier for a week or two, how do you ever narrow down where to explore? With 410km of pisted terrain in the 4 Valleys, it’s difficult to comprehend everything that lies beyond the poles.

Craft an epic winter break with this guide to off-piste skiing in Verbier, including its itinerary runs, heli-skiing opportunities, and the best ski guides in the area.

If you’re looking for a tailor made week of heli skiing in Verbier, or a weekend back country guided tour, then contact us today and we’ll create you an ultimate ski experience.

Verbier’s Itinerary Runs

Never left the piste before? One of the great things about Verbier is it offers easy and accessible options for your transition to the backcountry. Yellow itinerary runs are marked and opened according to avalanche risk, but they aren’t groomed or patrolled. This means you can sample rugged terrain with slightly lower risk.

Remember, you still shouldn’t attempt these runs alone and should make sure you have the right insurance to cover your descent. If it’s your first time venturing off-piste, make sure you go with a guide or someone experienced in backcountry skiing. Take some time to do your research and assess which runs are appropriate for your level.

If you have friends who already skied in Verbier, chances are you already heard about the Chassoure-Tortin run. It’s one of the most challenging items to tick off your Verbier freeriding checklist. Starting at the meeting point between the Lac Des Vaux 2 and Tortin-Chassoure lifts. From there you’ll need to choose whether you want to start with a rocky traverse or a huge wall of moguls.

Looking for more itinerary action? You’re in the perfect area. Take the lift up to Col des Gentianes and take the yellow run back to Tortin. At 3.5km, it’s rumoured to be the longest mogulled run in Europe. That’s one way to tone up your leg muscles!

You could also head over to the Mont Gele summit. At 3,023m, it’s the only spot where you can see the entire 4 Valleys at once. You’ll have two different yellow itineraries to choose from. Pick the south-facing route to La Chaux to ski a huge bowl or take the long winding route back to Tortin.

To wrap up the day, you could then ski down to the base of the Lac des Vaux 2 lift and take the Col des Mines run. You’ll start with a gully that could be powder or moguls before hitting a long traverse. You can then take a powdery run back to the Verbier bowl or opt for the longer Vallon d’Arby. This vast valley is packed with tree skiing, couloirs, and powder bowls. It emerges at a blue in La Tzoumaz, so make sure you leave enough time to catch the lift back home.

Verbier’s Backcountry

Once you’re ready to get further off the beaten track, there are over 87 off-piste trails to choose from in Verbier. You can find an in-depth backcountry guidebook at the tourist information centre. But if you’re looking for inspiration, Tortin, Mont Gele, and Chassoure all offer excellent powder. Bruson is also a fantastic option, as it collects deep powder between the trees.

Start between Mont Gele and La Chaux for a sunny day playing in the gullies. Then head to the front side where you can access the Stairway to Heaven via the Col des Gentianes yellow.

Stairway to Heaven is one of the most infamous backcountry routes in the 4 Valleys. You’ll need to hike a steep couloir before taking a long ski down the Glacier des Louettes Econdue.
From Mont Gele, you could also attempt the spine-tingling Banana Couloir. This exposed and steep couloir isn’t for the faint of heart and can be a pain to access.

To tick off more quirky names, head to Rock Garden and Hidden Valley. Hidden Valley is on the North side and offers a complex route of skiing and hiking. Rock Garden involves less hiking and, as its name suggests, offers a chance to make fresh tracks through a 300m wide rock field.

The back of Mont Fort offers the most challenging freeriding in the 4 Valleys. It’s only for freeriders with extensive experience in their pocket, thanks to the glacier, steep couloirs, and high avalanche risk. The long route involves lots of novelty, taking you past two lakes and a dam on your way out.

Why Hire A Ski Guide In Verbier?

Many people dismiss taking a guide, especially if they’ve already got some off-piste skiing under their belt. But if it’s your first time skiing off-piste in the 4 Valleys, we highly recommend taking a guide for at least one day of your trip.

Not only are they trained in how to keep you safe during natural disasters and medical incidents, they’ve spent years building up their knowledge of the ski area. They know the slopes like the back of their hands, helping you to find untracked routes and hidden gems.

They’ll be able to assess your level and match you to slopes that’ll maximise your backcountry experience. It also offers an invaluable opportunity to improve your freeriding technique, making your ski guide in Verbier an investment for many trips to come.

Heli-skiing In Verbier

To take your off-piste experience in Verbier to the next level, why not consider a heli-skiing tour? It’ll allow you to reach unmatched heights and make fresh tracks in some of the most remote corners of the 4 Valleys. And according to Adrenaline Heli-ski, Verbier is one of the best places to heli-ski in the Alps.

Touch down on the famous Petit Combin. From 3,672m you’ll be greeted with the fabulous backdrop of the Grand Combin and Mont Blanc. From here you’ll have over 2000m of powder to descend on, with various routes down depending on the weather and your ability. Brave the steep North face, marvel at the Grand Saint Bernard Valley, or explore magnificent glaciers.

Rosablanche offers variety for all levels of skier. If you’re new to heliskiing, you can choose from one of the easiest routes in the area. For seasoned pros, you could choose the steep Vallon of Severeu or the Prafleuri, ending at the huge Grande Dixence dam.

The Trient Glacier is another popular drop-off spot with a great choice of itineraries. Ski vast valleys, challenging couloirs, or ski all the way to France.

Best Ski Guides And Heli-skiing Tours In Verbier

Altitude Ski School are a great option for helping you to explore Verbier’s backcountry. Their private guides are federal quality and experts in the local area. Adults and children are welcome, as long as they are comfortable skiing red runs. They’ll discuss the plan with you the day before and can schedule anything for three hours to a full-day session. If it’s your first time skiing off-piste, they also offer tailored lessons to help you optimise your technique.

Adrenaline Ski School have been established in Verbier for over 25 years and have a highly qualified team. They offer off-piste coaching from three hours to a full day. If you’ve fallen in love with the world of backcountry, they also offer courses in mountain safety and avalanches so you can get off the beaten path for years to come.

Adrenaline Ski Guides are the most popular heli-skiing company in Verbier. They combine an official mountain guide office and a helicopter office. Their main base is Verbier, but they also operate in other Swiss skiing hotspots and represent some of the best heli-skiing operators worldwide. They offer one-, three-, or six-day heliskiing packages, so you could explore a different peak every day of the week if you wanted to.

Looking for an ultimate luxury chalet in Verbier to match your ultimate ability? Contact our team today and we’ll tailor make your skiing holiday to ensure that it’s exhilarating!

Verbier’s ski area

Verbier sits at 1,500m, and its highest point on Mont Fort stands at a towering 3,300m. This means you can indulge in dreamy snow conditions throughout the season. With 27% of Verbier’s piste graded as expert, you can rest assured you won’t be ending a day under-stimulated. And with a seamless lift network, you can enjoy long uninterrupted cruises back into town.

With so much to do in Verbier, it might be difficult to tear yourself away. But, for advanced skiers, a 4 Valleys ski pass offers a huge return on investment. This gives you access to one of the world’s top five lift-linked ski areas, offering a fantastic variety of terrain and lift-served off-piste options. Modern high-speed lifts are on hand to whisk you away to the neighbouring resorts of Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, and La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres.

La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres is often dismissed as a beginner-friendly area, but you’ll find some fun tree skiing around this area. Both Thyon and Veysonnaz offer fantastic variety and quieter slopes. While Nendaz boasts north-facing slopes that hold their snow well and two tricky itinerary runs. And don’t forget about Bruson, perfect for bad weather days and lots of fun tree-skiing.

Verbier’s Black Runs

If you picked Verbier for its expert slopes, chances are you’ve already heard of Mont Fort. It’s the highest peak in the 4 Valleys, and the panoramic views from up here are enough reason to visit alone. On a clear day at the summit, you’ll be able to spot the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin, and Mont Blanc.

To ski back down Mont Fort’s steep black, you’ll need to be at the top of your game. After you’ve contended with the steep kilometre stretch of moguls, you can continue a 15km cruise back into Verbier choosing a variety of routes. You’ll definitely have earned a beer at apres after that descent.

Many people dismiss Bruson as an intermediate area, saved for bad weather days when the treeline can protect from the elements. But you’ll find some great skiing here and, if the sun is out in the rest of the 4 Valleys, it will be relatively quiet.

Pasay is the only black run in the area but offers two different starting points. Start with the easy option, gradually progressing to the main piste’s 600m drop, or throw yourself in the deep end with a steep 35° slope. Bruson is also a top spot for off-piste skiing, with lots of fun routes to take through the trees. Take some of the easier runs and keep an eye out for opportunities to spice things up.

For an action-packed morning in Nendaz, head up to the top of the Greppon Blanc. From here you’ll have three different black runs to choose from. Whether you then decide to head home or continue further afield, you can access the other areas via a series of tricky reds. You could also head over to Plan-Du-Fou, where you’ll have the choice of four different black routes. Les Fontaines is a steep and quiet run perfect for picking up some serious speed.

If you find yourself over in Thyon, make sure you try the Etherolla run. It offers outstanding views of the Grande Dixence dam and the summits of the Val d’Hérens. The long black is a real leg burner, with four different pitches to have a go on. Make sure you squeeze in a race down Piste de L’ors. As a former World Cup run with a 900m descent, it’s a real test for both your legs and nerves. But with fabulous views of Sion and huge bends to ramp your speed up, the pleasure will more than outweigh the pain.

On your way back into Verbier, hang out in Attelas for a while. Warm up with the short Lac Des Vaux black then recover on the cruisy reds and blues. Wrap up the day with the long FIS run down to the Carrefour back in town. It’s the perfect way to exhaust yourself before you wrap up the day, with a staggering 971m drop. With wide and varied piste, you can end the afternoon feeling satisfied.

Verbier’s Itinerary Runs

When looking at a 4 Valleys piste map, you might feel disappointed at the amount of black lines. But don’t let that fool you. A few years ago, many of Verbier’s black runs were re-graded as yellow itinerary runs. This means they’re no longer groomed but are still marked and opened/closed according to safety conditions. If you’re looking for an easy introduction to off-piste skiing with less risk, then these are the slopes for you. And with many of them lift-linked, you have the option to meet up with less confident skiers again at the bottom.

The most famous itinerary run in Verbier is the Chassoure-Tortin. It’s easy to access via the Lac Des Vaux 2 or Tortin-Chassoure lifts. Not only is it steep and icy, but you’ll also have to navigate a mogul field and a rocky traverse. But if your nerves can take it, the rewards are huge, especially on a fresh powder day.

Other itinerary runs to note are around Mont Gele, Col des Gentianes, and Lac des Vaux. If the idea of exploring the backcountry has captured your imagination, Verbier has some of the most accessible off-piste skiing in the world. You can find out more about Verbier’s itinerary runs and its backcountry opportunities in our off-piste guide to skiing in Verbier.

Looking to up your skiing game on your next winter break? Maybe it’s time to tick Verbier’s epic slopes off your list. While Verbier is hailed for its advanced skiing opportunities, this stylish resort offers endless delights for every level of skier.

Verbier is part of the vast 4 Valleys, one of the world’s top five lift-linked ski areas. Some of Switzerland’s best lifts are available to whisk you across 410km of piste. The sunny south-facing bowl and snow-sure conditions create the perfect environment for long days of cruising. And with red runs making up 40% of the 4 Valleys, you’ll see huge progression by the end of the week.

With stunning views of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn, you’ll have plenty of motivation to master the mountains. Start planning your snow renaissance with this intermediate guide to skiing in Verbier.

If you’re looking for the perfect holiday rental, we have an excellent selection of ski in ski out chalets in Verbier. Maximize your time on the slopes by skiing straight out of the front door in the morning and catching the last lift up to ski back.

Verbier Ski Area

Verbier sits at 1,500m, offering snow-sure conditions all the way back to town. As you’re building your confidence, you’ll find lots within Verbier’s limits to have you shining by the end of the week. Almost 80% of the runs are suited to beginners and intermediates.

If you’re ready to challenge yourself, consider investing in a pass for the whole of the 4 Valleys. With this you’ll be able to ski Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, La Tzoumaz, and Thyon. With endless runs to choose from and even some intermediate introduction to backcountry, you could ski here for weeks without getting bored.

Tricky red runs often link the various ski areas in the 4 Valleys, so you’ll need to be bold enough to venture between them. If you’re desperate to make use of your pass but are finding the links too difficult, you could use the lifts to get around, but this won’t be the most efficient use of your time.

The Verbier area offers fantastic connections and a variety of runs for all abilities. High-speed lifts make it the ideal spot for long cruises back down the valley. La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres are the best option for newer skiers and families, while the more challenging slopes are over in Mont Fort. On bad weather days, head to Bruson, where the trees will protect you from the elements and increase your visibility.

Finding Your Snow Feet Again

If it’s been a while since your last time on the slopes, Savoleyres and La Tzoumaz are the ideal place to start. A telecabin will transport you from Verbier up to 2,354m from where you can choose the south-facing slopes of Verbier or the north-facing slopes of La Tzoumaz. This area is quieter, so perfect for getting a feel for your skis again. Kick off your week with the picturesque blue above Les Esserts beginners’ area then try out the cruisy Le Rouge run. After a morning exploring the rest of the blue runs here, you could also sample some of the easy reds.

Your next stop after Savoleyres/ La Tzoumaz should be La Chaux. From here you can ski some short easy blues before taking the lovely blue Etierces run through the trees and all the way back into town.

You could also take the Funispace telecabin from Les Ruinettes and take the cruisy Lacs run from Attelas. Just be aware that from here you’ll either need to take the lift back to Les Ruinettes or opt for the long red back down.

Conquering The 4 Valleys

After all those blues, your confidence will be higher than the altitudes you’re about to hit. Start progressing on the reds in Savoleyres/ La Tzoumaz and up to sunny La Chaux. From here you can take the Le Jumbo lift up to 2,950m and take the long Gentianes red back down. You can really feel like you got the miles in while in these areas, thanks to lots of excellent high-speed chairlifts.

For a full day of adventure, start your morning in Nendaz, where you’ll find some long reds and blues to get you warmed up. After you can take the Tracouet run to Prarion and lift-hop over to Tortin. This area is often overlooked, meaning you’ll find incredible reds without the crowds.

Depending on how you do for time, you could then head towards Veysonnaz or take the gondola to Col Des Gentianes. This gives you scope to start at 2,950m and cruise whatever route you like back to Verbier in time for sunset drinks. For ultimate pleasure, we recommend wrapping up with the Hattey run through the trees.

If you’re confident on red runs, Veysonnaz will quickly become your favourite destination in the 4 Valleys. The great network of long red runs here will keep you entertained for hours, and there’s a selection of blues towards Thyon when your legs need some downtime. But with glorious scenery, you’ll be stopping for plenty of photo breaks anyway. For a real leg burner, start at the top of Greppon Blanc at 2,700m and take the network of reds all the way back to Veysonnaz at 1,400m.

Have half a day to spare? Head over to the Bruson area. This tree-lined spot often gets forgotten about until a poor visibility day. But there’s fantastic snow here and a nice selection of intermediate terrain perfect for whiling away a few hours.

If you’re feeling gutsy by the end of the week, you could try the black down from Mont Fort- but it’s not for the faint of heart. Even if you don’t ski down, it’s worth taking the lift up on a clear day just to see the views. At a height of 3,330m, you’ll have sweeping views of the Matterhorn, Grand Combin, and Mont Blanc Massif.

Getting Off The Beaten Slopes

If you’ve got the itch to do something more with your time in Verbier, it’s a great introduction to off-piste skiing. Lac des Vaux offers easy access to some intermediate itineraries. Itinerary runs are unpisted but still patrolled, so give you that extra piece of security as you begin your transition into backcountry. Val d’Arbi and Col des Mines are gentle places to start. For more tips on exploring the backcountry of the 4 Valleys, check out our guide to off-piste skiing in Verbier.

A stay in Verbier offers seamless access to one of the world’s largest lift-linked ski areas. But if you’re clipping on your skis for the first time, what does this 410km of piste mean for you?

You may not be sampling Verbier’s infamous backcountry, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a fantastic place to learn to ski. 36% of the piste is marked blue, separate beginner’s areas are perfect for building your confidence, and the sunny south-facing bowl is perfect for keeping you warm as you master your new favourite sport. And with a fantastic village and a lively apres ski scene, you’ll find more than enough to do between lessons.

Once you’ve mastered the greens and blues of Verbier, you’ll be booking your next snow adventure before you can say snow plough! Start planning your trip with this complete beginner’s guide to skiing in Verbier.

If you’re a beginner looking for luxury accommodation in Verbier then talk to our team. We’ll ensure you have ski tuition booked as part of your itinerary and who knows, you might be skiing the whole of the 4 Valleys before the end of the week?

Lift passes

A big perk of learning to ski in Verbier is that beginners won’t need to buy a full lift pass. The three nursery areas offer cheaper passes and you can even book for a half day. There are also several ski schools who include ski passes in their packages.

Even if you’re not ready for extra exploration by the end of the week, you can buy a Verbier-only lift pass. The full 4 Vallees lift pass is more suited to intermediates and advanced skiers, and Verbier will give you more than enough to keep you busy. Just want to dip your toes in the water? You can buy a pass for just four hours.

Getting started

Verbier’s beginner zones are accessible and many of them are lower down in the valley. You won’t be wasting precious energy on a long commute and you’ll be more sheltered from the elements. The village is at an altitude of 1,500m, so you’ll still get excellent snow conditions.

Les Esserts is a little higher up and is easy to access by bus. The extra height means you can get your first taste of outstanding mountain views without tackling any scary runs. It’s the largest beginner area in the resort and is also home to Switzerland’s longest magic carpet. There’s a restaurant with a terrace here, perfect for watching your family learning to ski or meeting the rest of your group for lunch.

When you’re feeling confident, you could take things up a notch at Le Rouge. This is still a nursery area, but it’s slightly steeper so you can work more on controlling your speed. If you want to squeeze in even more practice, there’s a free beginner’s slope in Lourtier. It’s a 20-minute drive from Verbier and has floodlit slopes perfect for a bit of night skiing.

Children

Verbier offers a magical first-time skiing experience for kids and plenty to keep them entertained off the slopes too. Thanks to the sunny pistes, you’ll have a lot fewer cold noses to contend with. Children under eight years old ski for free in Verbier and there are discounts on lift passes for children under 14.

For your little ones, Les Moulins is the best place to learn. It’s smaller, with just one drag lift, but it’s right in the heart of Verbier, making it easy to drop them off on your way to the slopes. The area is exclusive for ski lessons, so they’ll be able to learn in a relaxed and safe environment. It’s also home to a creche and a kids club so you can take lots of time to yourself and enjoy the mountains.

Progression

Nothing beats the rush of breaking away from the nursery slopes and exploring the mountains for the first time. Once you’ve mastered your turns, La Chaux is the next logical step. The blues here are slow and gentle. Spend an afternoon cruising the south-facing slopes with dreamy sun-softened snow. From here you can swoop through the trees on the long Etierces run.

If you’re learning in Les Esserts, you could start transitioning to the slopes around La Tzoumaz/ Savoleyres. The area is quiet and relaxed and is just above Les Esserts. It has a nice network of wide blues, perfect for building your confidence away from the crowds. Just make sure you keep an eye on your route so you don’t end up braving any of the steeper reds.

Ski Schools

A fantastic ski school can be the difference between you ending the week racing down the slopes or never wanting to return. Luckily, a luxurious and modern resort like Verbier attracts some of the best instructors in the Alps.

Adrenaline Ski School has been thriving in Verbier for over 25 years. Famous for their quality, they have experienced instructors who specialise in various disciplines. They offer private and group lessons for children, teenagers, and adults, so the whole group is catered for.

New Generation are a British ski school who have established themselves in Verbier since 2006. They know Verbier’s slopes like the back of their hands and pride themselves on providing a warm and personalised service. Most of the courses they offer are advanced, but they also offer excellent private tuition.

Mixed groups

Being stuck on the greens while the rest of the group ventures off to ski blacks all day can feel disheartening. While Verbier might be hailed as the top choice for advanced skiers, it’s still a fantastic option for groups with mixed abilities.

Since many of the nursery slopes are close to town, it’ll be easy to catch up with your group for a quick mountain lunch. Savoleyres has a fun mix of blues and reds, so it’s an ideal spot to meet for a coffee or back at the lifts. Poach an intermediate for a couple of runs here and see if they can give you some extra tips.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Most people assume Zermatt is skiing heaven, but the slopes of this stunning resort will give snowboarders an otherworldly experience. Wide pistes are perfect for newer boarders mastering their turns and aspiring freestylers will feel at home in one of Europe’s best snow parks. Need more convincing? Read this complete guide to snowboarding in Zermatt.

Looking for a boarders holiday? Check out our collection of luxury chalets in Zermatt and speak with The Luxury Chalet co. team for first hand experience of snowboarding in Zermatt.

Towering peaks and 360km of piste make Zermatt a premier snowsports destination. High altitudes and the Matterhorn glacier provide exceptional snow throughout the season. Zermatt is one of the few places in the world with open pistes 365 days a year.

With great variety in every ski area, you’re unlikely to get bored. But if you want to explore further afield or just have a craving for pasta, you can make your way across to Cervinia and spend the day in Italy.

Gornergrat and Rothorn are spread across the Findel Valley. You can reach Gornergrat by taking the highest open-air train in Europe and it has some good options for newer boarders. Rothorn is great for intermediates. Get here via an underground funicular or gradually move towards it from Gornergrat as your confidence grows.

The Matterhorn Ski Paradise is the highest pisted area in Europe and the star of the resort. Here you’ll find exquisite 360° views, a park and pipe, and access to Cervinia. Schwarzee is a pretty and quiet area with great snow conditions. It’s mostly served by reds and itinerary runs and has a half pipe for boarders.

Beginner Snowboarding in Zermatt

The Wolli Beginner’s Park at Sunnegga is an excellent place to kickstart your snowboarding career. It’s sunny and sheltered so you can take in everything that your instructor has to say without suffering in the cold. Away from the busy main pistes, you can learn to turn in a relaxed environment. The five magic carpets are ideal for beginners, and you’ll spend minimal time queuing for the lifts. There’s even a magic carpet saved only for snowboarders.

Progressing beginners may struggle in Zermatt. Cat tracks linking ski areas and the descent down to the village can feel frustrating. The designated slow slopes around Sunnegga will help you feel less cut off by speedy skiers. Keep your cool on these slopes and remember that many of the new skiers and boarders here are yet to establish their confidence or spatial awareness.

Avoid the No.7 slow slope down to Sunnegga until you are comfortable with your speed. You’ll need to ramp it up on the steep section to carry you through the following flat. While Sunnegga is the go-to place for beginner skiers, new boarders will be much more comfortable learning on the blues at Gornergrat. You can take different wide routes down while avoiding the drag and chair lifts all day if you want. The slopes are wide and relaxed so you can concentrate on progressing without any pressure.

Intermediate Snowboarding In Zermatt

Even if you’re becoming a confident boarder, it’s recommended to take an instructor or guide for at least one day. They’ll help you suss out Zermatt’s vast network of pistes and establish which areas aren’t going to work for you as a boarder.

You’ll find some nice blues and reds in Rothorn to kick-start your day. Don’t do the reds towards the Patrullarve chair to avoid getting stuck on cat track. Instead, ride the No.19 red over to Gant and take the cable car up to Hohtalli. There’s a varied combination of reds here stretching all the way to the Riffelalp area. The fast lifts include minimal chairs, so you can cover a lot of ground in a day.

Matterhorn Ski Paradise has long red runs and some of the best views in the resort. But get off the top fast and make your way down the reds to Trockner Steg so you don’t waste too much time on the drag lifts.

You can also go from the Matterhorn Glacier Ski Paradise to the neighbouring resort of Cervinia. If you’re finding the reds in Zermatt difficult, they tend to be easier and more board friendly, if not a little flat in places. The most annoying part of a day in Cervinia will be getting back into Zermatt. The flat area requires you to dodge hordes of skating skiers. Get back before the cable car closes if you don’t want to navigate the drag lifts.

Advanced Snowboarding In Zermatt

There are some thrills to keep the experts satisfied on the piste. The Obere National is the most famous run in Zermatt. The steep black was once used for the World Cup races. While it will challenge you, it’s wide and has good snowmaking facilities, so it’s the perfect challenge for a confident boarder.

The long No.62 black is a popular route back to Furi. While it’s a definite workout, avoid when it’s crowded as the narrower parts require some weaving between skiers. The short and fast No.54 black from Hirli is a fantastic way to end your day. Since it’s rarely busy, you can take the opportunity to ramp up some speed before joining the long red back home.

The true draw of Zermatt for advanced snowboarders is the freeriding. To make the jump into off-piste, Zermatt has yellow itinerary runs that are marked and opened according to safety conditions. There’s a fantastic selection of these around Rothorn, Rote Nase, and Hirli. For more information on Zermatt’s itinerary runs and an in-depth look at off-piste in the area, read this guide on off-piste and heli-skiing in Zermatt.

Freestyle Snowboarding In Zermatt

There are some exceptional freestyle opportunities in Zermatt. The park on the Theodul Glacier is one of the most popular in the Alps. Covering 1,200m, there are endless features for all levels set to the staggering backdrop of the Matterhorn.

Rails, boxes, and tabletops give you lots of opportunities to experiment. Beginners can learn the ropes on easy jumps and boxes, professionals can show off in the rail garden, and everyone can join in the fun on the boardercross piste. When you’re ready for a break, there’s a coffee bar in the park with a DJ providing a soundtrack to the action.

For total beginners, there are also mini parks at Sunnegga and Riffelberg with easier options and magic carpets.

Zermatt has some of the world’s most enviable off-piste terrain. From soaring altitudes to hair-raising descents, it’s the ultimate destination for your next snow adventure. But with such a vast ski area, it’s difficult to know how to plan your week. Get an incredible backcountry experience with this guide to the best off-piste and heli-skiing in Zermatt.

If you’re looking for a tailor made week of heli skiing in Zermatt, or a weekend back country guided tour, then contact us today and we’ll create you an ultimate ski experience.

Zermatt’s Itinerary Ski Runs

The easiest introduction to off-piste skiing is to start on Zermatt’s itinerary runs. These are marked yellow on the map and open and close depending on safety regulations. They aren’t pisted or patrolled, so give you rugged terrain without the extra risk of avalanches. You still shouldn’t ski these runs alone and should make sure you have adequate insurance to cover you.

To ease into your itinerary run experience, start on the No.54 black run at Hirli. It’s one of the steepest pistes in Zermatt and will get your legs warmed up before you head back up the chairlift. From here you can take the 59 and 60 yellow runs down to Furi or cut across the slow slope and try No.58. All of these offer you lovely, sheltered routes through the trees with a few obstacles along the way.

The itinerary runs around Furi offer a variety of difficulties. Take the lifts up to Trockner Steg to get on the No. 67 or 68. There are also lots of red routes around here if you need a palette cleanser. Then take the No.62 black back to Furi where you can go to Schweigmatten and ride the No.43 back down the valley.

The Gornergrat and Rothorn areas are well connected with lots of itinerary routes to fill your days. Head to the top of Hohtalli and get on the No.30 Mittelritz run. The 700m descent has lots of fun bumps to get your legs burning. After this, you can take the No.25 black to Eja or head back to Hohtalli via Gant to access Rote Nase. The network of yellows in this area have some jaw-clenching 1000m descents.

Once back in Gant, take the chairlift to Blauherd and ski the No.10 or continue up to Rothorn. This is an opportunity to mix things up and give your legs a break. You can ski a mix of blues, reds, blacks, and yellows in whichever combination you prefer. Keep taking the cable car back up until you get tired or have exhausted all options.

Zermatt’s Backcountry Skiing

A stay in Zermatt gives you vast spaces of untouched snow at your fingertips. High altitudes and north-facing slopes provide great snow year-round.

Rothorn and Gornergrat are two well-linked areas suited to advanced skiers, so it’s a good place to start if you want to mix pisted and unpisted terrain. Gornergrat is great for building confidence but the off-piste slopes here get crowded, so move on once you’ve mastered the basics.

You’ll find that the terrain gets progressively better as you move further from Gornergrat towards Rothorn. Unless you get a dump of snow, avoid the area under the Gant chair lift. It’s a popular route and you won’t be making any fresh tracks. The best slopes around here require you to get away from the lifts and do some hiking. But the powder and exhilarating descents are worth it.

Head to the bustling Rothorn top station and head to the west of the mountain where you’ll find around 1000m of off-piste away from the crowds. The snow here falls victim to the afternoon sun so conditions can vary wildly. If you want something a little easier, go east and cut left down the Tufterchumme Valley.

On the other side of Zermatt, you’ll find fun opportunities around Schwarzee, Trockner Steg, and Klein Matterhorn, from where you can also venture into the further slopes of Cervinia.

Bear in mind the cracks around the glacier area pose a serious threat. You shouldn’t attempt to leave marked areas when leaving the small Matterhorn, Rosa Plateau and Trockner Steg without an experienced guide.

From the top station at Schwarzee take the No.51 red piste and drop right after you pass the junction with the black. This difficult open tree section is known by the pros as the Schwarzee trees.

Going out with an experienced guide is about more than your safety. As well as having someone with you who keeps you away from dangerous routes and knows what to do in an emergency, they have in-depth experience with these mountains. They will be able to guide you to some of the best slopes in the resort and help you find magical secret spots. It’s an opportunity to make your off-piste experience ten times better.

Heli-skiing in Zermatt

To really maximise the off-piste potential in Zermatt you’re not going to reach it by lift. Heli-skiing will get you to some of the most untouched snow in the mountains in record time. Soaring between 4000m peaks and getting up close and personal with the Matterhorn makes heli-skiing in Zermatt a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The most popular heli-skiing destination in Zermatt and the highest heli-skiing in Europe is the Monte Rosa. Starting at an altitude of 4,250m, the entire 2,500 vertical meter run is on glaciers. This route will take the whole day and finish in Furi.

Alphubeljoch is another towering destination starting at 4,200m. The open terrain here will give you endless panoramic views as you make your descent. The slightly lower Äschihorn sits at 3,562m but doesn’t offer any fewer thrills. From here you can enjoy a sunny day skiing the south side back to Zermatt or plunge into deep powder on the Hohlichtgletscher and end in Tasch.

Best Ski Guides and Heli-skiing in Zermatt

The two main heliskiing companies in Zermatt are Air Zermatt and Zermatters. Many different tour operators offer to heli-ski but most sub-contract through these two companies.

Air Zermatt has been running the transport and safety of the resort since 1968. They operate heliskiing tours to five different peaks including Unterrothorn, Testa Grigia, Monte Rosa, Alphubeljoch, and Äschihorn.

Zermatters is a specialist outdoor adventure company that prides themselves on always having a local guide on their trips. They offer tours to four different destinations which are Monte Rosa, Äschihorn, Alphubeljoch, and Valpelline. As well as heli-skiing, they offer a variety of lessons, fun activities like paragliding and husky sledding, and ski touring courses.

Another option for your off-piste needs is Summit Ski School. With an extensive knowledge of Zermatt and experience with mountains around the world, you’ll get an exciting and informative experience. They offer private ski guiding, introductions to off-piste, and heli-skiing tours with Air Zermatt.

We also have an off-piste guide to skiing in Zermatt for those looking for untouched mountainside.

Looking for an ultimate luxury chalet in Zermatt to match your ultimate ability? Contact our team today and we’ll tailor make your skiing holiday to ensure that it’s exhilarating!

The Advanced Ski Area

Zermatt has some of the highest pistes in Europe and a vast ski area with 360km of piste. High altitudes and the Matterhorn Glacier ensure you have fantastic snow conditions whenever you choose to visit.

With reds and blacks in every ski area, you’ll find lots of variety and fantastic scenery. But when looking for a challenge you may find the options a little limited. Luckily, Zermatt has an excellent selection of yellow slopes. They aren’t pisted or patrolled but offer a safer option if you want some difficult terrain.

Resting on the border with Italy, you get two for the price of one with a stay in Zermatt. Ski over to the Italian resort of Cervino and you open an endless choice of options. On the Swiss side, there are four main ski areas to explore. A modern network of 53 lifts offers you a fast and efficient way to get across the mountains so you can maximise your time on the slopes.

The famous Matterhorn Ski Paradise is the highest pisted area in Europe and always has great snow thanks to the glacier. Here you’ll find mostly reds, a couple of blacks, and easy access to Cervinia. Schwarzee is a pretty area away from the crowds. It’s easy to reach via the Matterhorn Express. Here you’ll find the steepest piste in Europe as well as some great itinerary runs.

Rothorn and Gornergrat are best suited to experts and advanced intermediates. The two areas are interconnected over a huge expanse of the Ridel Valley. You can reach Rothorn by underground funicular and Gornergrat by taking the highest open-air train in Europe.

Zermatt’s Black Ski Runs

The most iconic black run in Zermatt is the Obere National in Sunnegga. Once used for the World Cup races, you’ll descend 3.1km with a vertical drop of 600m. It’s steep but wide and has excellent artificial snow-making facilities, so it’s an easy one to tick off the bucket list and a definite leg burner.

The runs around Rothorn and Gornergrat hold the most challenges for advanced skiers.

Start with the No.29a black run down from the Grifthittli chair lift. Once it merges with the red, keep right to get on the No.25 black. From here you can take the lifts all the way to the top of Rothorn or stop in Sunnegga for another go on the Obere National.

If you want something relaxed, you can take a long and varied route down from the top of Rothorn. Start with the No.13 black before merging back with the blue run. After some light cruising, take the No.15 red. This long, wide piste has fabulous Matterhorn views to get you motivated. Halfway down, you can choose if you want to stay on the red or take an extra black with a vertical drop of 1500m. Once you’re back at the base of the cable car you can repeat it all again or take the extended red route home.

For a long and challenging descent back to the valley, start on your favourite red at Klein Matterhorn. Aim towards the base of the Furgg to Sandiger Boden, where you can take the lengthy and difficult No.62 all the way to Furi. Your legs will be more than ready to get back on a red from there.

If you head over to Italy for the day, you might find the reds here a little easier than on the Swiss side. The most difficult piste can be found around the Pancheron chair lift. Here you’ll find a great combination of long black and red runs. Make sure you do this earlier in the day so that you have time to get back up before lifts close.

At Pancheron, you’ll also find one of the hardest slopes in Cervinia. With moraines on one side, a rock cemetery on the other and the beautiful Italian resort below, the Pista Nera Del Cervino is undeniably pretty. The 1.2km run is steep but well groomed, with flatter parts towards the second half.

Zermatt’s Yellow Ski Slopes

Looking for more rugged terrain and the chance to tear up the slopes away from the crowds? Zermatt’s selection of yellows are unpisted but are marked and opened/ closed like regular runs. It’s a good step towards off-piste but with a little extra safety. Since they aren’t patrolled, it’s not recommended that you ski them alone.

You can craft a good day around the Rothorn area by taking the No.16 and 17 runs down from the top or taking the pisted route down and keeping right to get onto No.18. These are great introductions to itinerary runs and you can repeat each one in the loop by taking the cable car back up.

From Hohtalli you can take the No.28 red to get on the long Mittelritz itinerary run back to Gant. It’s a bumpy 700m vertical descent so do it early before you get tired. Or ramp up the heat with a hop up to Rote Nase. Here you can ski a network of itinerary runs all the way back down. These 1000m descents are sure to get your blood pumping.

This is just an introduction to some of the yellow slopes you can try on your trip to Zermatt. For more information on itinerary runs in Zermatt, read this complete guide to off-piste skiing in Zermatt.

Zermatt’s Backcountry

For advanced skiers, this resort has much more to it than just marked slopes. Zermatt has some of the best off-piste skiing in the world. If you’re not finding enough to stimulate you, it might be time to venture into the world of off-piste and heli-skiing.

For in-depth advice on Zermatt’s best backcountry, you can also check out this guide to off-piste and heli-skiing in Zermatt. Here you’ll find all the best tips on Zermatt’s itinerary runs and how to get off the beaten slopes.

The slopes of Zermatt are an intermediate’s dream. With long cruisy blues and reds that will get your heart rate up, you’ll have no shortage of options to explore the mountains. But with so much on offer, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Start your ski trip with all the inside knowledge on where to go with this complete intermediate’s guide to skiing in Zermatt. If you’re new to the slopes then head to our beginners ski guide in Zermatt. Likewise, if you’re looking for the black runs then head to our advanced skiiers guide in Zermatt.

If you’re looking for the perfect holiday rental, we have an excellent selection of ski in ski out chalets in Zermatt. Maximize your time on the slopes by skiing straight out of the front door in the morning and catching the last lift up to ski back.

Zermatt Ski Area

Zermatt’s relaxed slopes offer a fun way to explore the mountains without any pressure. And with some of the best views the alps have to offer, you won’t want to rush your descents. Altitudes reaching 3,899m provide exceptional snow and the Matterhorn Glacier gives you year-round snow-sure conditions.

Zermatt is on the border with Italy. So you can ski to the neighbouring resort of Cervinia to discover an even more expansive ski area and stop for a pizza and prosecco lunch. If you want to stay on the Swiss side, you’ll have more than enough to keep you entertained. The four main ski areas all have fantastic options for intermediates, and you won’t have any trouble designing a suitable route to get you from A to B.

All the ski areas are linked by an efficient system of 53 modern lifts. As the majority of runs are suitable for intermediate skiers, it’s recommended to get the full lift pass so you can make the most of everything the resort has to offer.

The most famous area is the Matterhorn Ski Paradise. It’s the highest pisted ski area in Europe. You’ll have ideal snow conditions here thanks to its position on the glacier. And as one of the world’s top ten largest ski areas, you’ll find lots of variety to build up your skiing skills.

The pretty Schwarzsee area is ideal for increasing your confidence and picking up some speed. The runs are in great condition and are often quiet, so you’ll have a great time flying down away from the crowds.

You can get to Rothorn and Gornergrat by underground funicular or train. These two interconnected areas thread across the Findel Valley. With many reds and more challenging blues, these areas are a great option as you become more advanced.

Just progressing from the beginner’s slopes or it’s been a while since you last skied? There are lots of options to build your confidence and get you excited about getting out into the alps.

Zermatt Intermediate Skiing (warm up)

Sunnegga sits just below Rothorn and can be accessed by the Sunnegga Express. The No. 6 and 7 runs here are good for getting started, with one steeper part on the left of No.7. Keep in mind that these are dedicated slow slopes so don’t go too crazy and keep the experience welcoming for progressing beginners. This area also has some of the best mountain restaurants in Zermatt, including the much-loved Chez Vrony.

On the Gornergrat side, you’ll find a nice choice of gentle blues. Start on the No.38 slow slope above Riffelberg then take the chair lift back up and build your skills on three different winding blues.

You can access Gornergrat from the centre of Zermatt by taking the Gornergrat Railway all the way to the top. This is the highest open-air train in Europe and will give you some of the most breath-taking views of your trip. If you have any non-skiers in your group, this is a great option to give them a taste of the mountains, with a range of panoramic restaurants at the top.

At the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, you can take the No.86 blue run and cruise above the clouds. There’s a good mix of reds and blues here for when you’re ready to spice things up.

Zermatt Intermediate Skiing

Conquered the blues in Sunnegga and are ready for some reds? Move closer to Rothorn by taking the No.4 then getting the Palltrullarve chair back up. Or for an easier introduction, you can ride the cable car up to Rothorn. From here you can ski the No.14 blue then take a short red to the base of the chairlift. This route will give you quiet pistes to practice and mind-blowing views to kickstart your week.

Once you’ve mastered these, you’ll have no trouble venturing around the wider Rothorn and Gornergrat areas. The No.28 and 29 reds around Gornergrat are long glorious runs away from the crowds that will give you uninterrupted views. After a day of shredding the vast selection of reds, take the highest lift in Europe to Klein Matterhorn. The panoramic views and the infinite red route down is an idyllic but leg-burning way to end a day’s skiing.

Head back up to Klein Matterhorn the next day to explore the excellent choice of reds on offer here. This area usually has the best snow in Zermatt and cruisy unintimidating runs.

Take the same route as yesterday or ride the gondola all the way to the top. If you fancy a break, there are some great non-skiing activities up here including a 360° viewing platform and a cave full of ice sculptures.

From here you can start an Italian adventure by taking a combination of reds and blues into Cervinia. Or explore the tangled network of reds that will take you around Schwarzee. With multiple variations of runs, you can ski these lifts again and again without taking the same route. The long No.51 red will take you all the way down the valley with a pretty traverse to Furi. The pistes here are just as nice as around the Matterhorn but are blessed with fewer crowds.

The Italian side opens up an extra world of skiing opportunities with endless red routes for the adventurous intermediate. But if you’re looking for something more relaxed, there are pretty blue routes around Plan Maison.
